Weber leads Goodrich quartet at team tournament

Despite a subpar team record at the Goodrich Team Wrestling Tournament Feb. 4, the host Martians had four wrestlers that excelled on the day
The Martians went 2-3 on the day, defeating East Detroit 48-23 and Swartz Creek 39-24, while Goodrich’s three losses came against Fowlerville 36-35; Richmond 34-27; and Rochester Adams 36-27. Goodrich’s team record for the season is now 21-10.
Sophomore Mark Weber continued his undefeated season for the Martians, compiling a 7-0 record at the tournament to improve his season record to 44-0. Three other Goodrich wrestlers ? Kyler Elsworth, David Garr and Grant Overcashier ? went 6-1 on the day.
The Martians started out the day against Fowlerville. That matchup was a nip-and-tuck contest, with Goodrich leading 35-22 at one point before Fowlerville won their final three matches to pull out the win.
Justin Seaford (275), Garr (103), Weber (119), and Brad Armstrong (145) earned pinfall victories for the Martians in that contest, while Overcashier (130), Nick Gatchell (135) and Elsworth (152) won by decision.
Goodrich then bounced back by more than doubling East Detroit’s point total when the two teams clashed. The Martians flew out of the gate, winning seven matches in a row after East Detroit won the opening matchup.
Garr (103), Weber (112), Drew Weil (125), Overcashier (130), Gatchell (135) and Elsworth (152) earned pinfall wins, while Brian Grzecki (119) and Nick Lovell (140) won by decision.
The Martians then lost close matchups to Richmond and Rochester Adams before closing out the tournament with a win against Swartz Creek.
In a Feb. 2 dual meet, the Martians defeated Mt. Morris 75-3 and Birch Run 39-29.
Against Birch Run, the Martians started out strong, winning their first four matches. Weil (125) defeated David Christie 4-2; Overcashier (130) defeated Tim Smith 9-6; Gatchell (135) pinned Justin Mahlmiester in 1:08; and Lovell (140) won by forfeit.
Other Goodrich wrestlers winning their matches against Birch Run were Elsworth (152), Joe Hopkins (160), Kyle March (171) and Weber (112).
