Brandon netters improve to .500 in league by defeating Linden

As they head toward the finish line in the Flint Metro League race, Brandon’s varsity volleyball team earned a key league victory Feb. 13.
The visiting Blackhawks defeated Linden 25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22, to improve to 5-5 in the league and 16-15-6 overall.
Brandon coach Brian Williams said defeating the Eagles was a big plus for the team because it gave them a chance to finish among the top teams in the league.
‘Linden played tough tonight but we were able to do some things offensively that they could not handle,? he said.
Leading the way was Savannah Stedman with 22 kills and Sandra Oliver with five kills. Defensively, senior Brittany Kelley has really stepped it up in the month of February, Williams said. This month she is 71-of-74 on serve receive-passing, with most of them being perfect passes.
Williams also said the Linden matchup was Brandon’s best serving game of the year, with Stedman and Oliver combining for 13 aces. ‘The development in our serving is helping take this team to the next level,? he said.
On Thursday, Feb. 9, the Blackhawks lost to host Fenton 20-25, 24-26, 25-20, 20-25. Brittany Kelley was 18-of-19 passing, with three aces and 10 digs, while Savannah Stedman had 20 kills, five blocks and five aces, and Lindsay Moskal contributed 13 kills and two blocks.
‘This was a tough loss for us,? Williams said. ‘Fenton is a much improved team since the first time we played them. We played OK, but Fenton out hustled us to the ball. Our defense needs to improve if we still want to get back amongst the leaders of the Flint Metro League.?
