The Clarkston boys tennis team stumbled in its first match after spring break, falling 7-1 to Rochester Adams. However, the Wolves responded with a 6-2 victory over Farmington.
Clarkston Coach Chas Claus said he didn’t think the break affected his team against Adams. He thought everyone played well against the Highlanders, but they are a tough team.
‘We played Adams very good,? Claus said. ‘They are at the top of the OAA II. They have a strong singles lineup. They are the favorite in the league and they showed why.?
Claus was very pleased with the team’s response against Farmington. In a few matches this season, the Wolves had a chance to win if they could take a couple flights that went to three sets, but couldn’t come through.
Against the Falcons, Clarkston was up 3-2 with three flights going to three sets. The Wolves needed to win two to take the match or one to tie. Clarkston was able to take all three to win in convincing fashion.
‘That was our best match so far,? Claus said. ‘The three flights came threw when it counted.?
With the win, Clarkston improves to 2-3 and 1-2 in league play.
The Wolves also took part in the Grand Blanc Tournament on Saturday and tied for seventh place of out eight teams. West Bloomfield edged East Lansing to win the tournament.
The tournament featured some tough competition including Birmingham Groves and Detroit Country Day. Claus is hopeful the competition will help improve his team.
‘That’s why we play the elite level teams because we eventually want to be an elite level program,? Claus said. ‘We play the tough competition so we can get better and hopefully translate that into some wins.?
The Wolves will attempt to pick up a couple conference wins in its next two matches. The Wolves took on Berkley on May 2, which finished too late for this edition of The Clarkston News. Clarkston then hosts Troy Athens on May 4.
The two matches are important since they will help determine where the Wolves are seeded in the OAA II tournament on May 11.
