Waste Away must improve service

Waste Away’s contract with the Village of Lake Orion for trash disposal service has been extended for one year, but the company has been put on notice that their service must improve.
The Lake Orion Village Council decided at the May 22 meeting to extend the contract, but said if there is no marked improvement by Dec. 2006, they will solicit bids from other companies, for service to begin on July 1, 2007.
Village Manager JoAnn Van Tassel said it would cost the village an additional $15,000 a year to resume service with Waste Management. The current collection fee charged to residents has not been increased for at least seven years.
Some of the complaints received by the village regarding Waste Away include large containers not being completely emptied, as Waste Away does not have lift devices on its trucks.
Also the village has not received recycling bins on a timely basis, and a Waste Away representative has not stopped by village hall to check on any calls received.
