Even though I grew up in this area, I’ve never spent much time in Clarkston until this week ? my first week as a reporter for The Clarkston News.
This week couldn’t have been better. I’ve gotten to meet many nice people and get to know the gorgeous town of Clarkston and its surrounding communities.
I hail from Lake Orion ? I know, Clarkston’s rival ? and will graduate from Oakland University with a degree in journalism in May.
At Oakland University, I worked for the student newspaper, The Oakland Post, where I was the editor in chief.
I’ve also interned at The Oakland Press and ClickOnDetroit.com. I hope to bring my experience and knowledge of journalism and the area to The Clarkston News.
When I’m not working or attending classes, and when the weather is nice, I love heading down to Comerica Park to watch my favorite team, the Detroit Tigers.
I’ve been a Tigers fan since birth. Last season was the happiest time of my life and I hope to continue the chemistry of the team and winning ballgames into this season.
To me, nothing beats the smell of the freshly cut grass, the roar of the crowd and watching our boys play America’s game. It’s my passion in life, and if for some reason you can’t find me around town in the summer, check the CoPa!
I also enjoy reading anything about politics, current events or mysteries. My favorite author is Vince Flynn and I also enjoy reading several newspapers daily. I’m currently reading Bob Woodward’s, “State of Denial.”
As you may have guessed from my reading selections, I enjoy anything to do with political and governmental systems. I would love to see a society where everyone cared about the politics of the United States and actively participated in democracy.
Although, I do think tremendous strides have been made in the past year, as far as participation in democracy, with the gubernatorial election and diversity in the U.S. House and Senate.
It was refreshing to see when issues came up that would really impact people in Michigan, we turned out in records during a non-presidential election.
It brought a tear to my eye to see Nancy Pelosi stand behind President Bush during his State of the Union Address and seeing Keith Ellison being sworn in on the Quran as the first Muslim congressman.
I guess you would say I have high-hopes for democracy and for our nation.
As far as my personal goals, I would love to move to Washington D.C. one day to cover Capitol Hill and raise a large family.
If you ever have any questions or comments directed toward me, please don’t hesitate to call or come by the office ? I love meeting and talking to new people. See you around town!
