Eagle Creek Academy: A gem in our own backyard

Just a year-and-a-half old, Eagle Creek Academy has already earned a strong reputation for its state-of-the-art facilities and top-notch faculty, among many other things.
Seven years ago, Cathy Rondeau, the founder and principal of the school, purchased 20 acres on Silverbell Road in Oakland Township after realizing that there was a great desire for a private non-religious school for Junior Kindergarten through eighth grade in northern Oakland County.
‘Families are looking for alternatives,? Rondeau says. ‘They want a school that provides an excellent academic background while fostering individual growth and self-confidence.?
Rondeau founded Cathy’s Corner Child Care Center and Alpine Academy 12 years ago and has been an educator for more than 20 years.
Like most of the Eagle Creek Academy staff, Rondeau has a Masters degree in teaching and a true love for educating children.
The school opened in 2005 and gets its funding from various sources, including tuition, grants and donations from families and companies. A Board of Directors oversees the school’s budget, which has a savings account that will last for many years.
In the classroom, Eagle Creek offers a great student-teacher ratio and has a variety of electives and after-school activities.
‘We focus on reading, writing, math, science and social studies,? Rondeau notes. ‘Every child also studies the arts, Spanish and technology.?
She adds that their small class sizes allow each teacher to plan learning activities according to a student’s individual needs.
The school is also international, with families from Germany, Spain, France, Mexico, India, China and Sweden.
‘We believe that the knowledge, study skills and values children acquire in these formative years prepare them for a lifetime,? Rondeau says.
Their $13 million building has enough computers for every child in each classroom. The gym, stage, cafeteria, kitchen, art room and library at Eagle Creek are all state-of-the-art as well.
Their two soccer fields, baseball field, basketball and playgrounds offer a great outdoor alternative, along with Eagle Creek’s beautiful woodlands, wetlands and (naturally) a creek.
‘It is our hope that small groups, a rigorous curriculum, experienced teachers, personalized attention and an inspiring environment will help each child develop an excellent academic foundation and a strong sense of self-confidence,? Rondeau says.
