Celebrating 175 years of history

Residents young and old filled Depot Park Sunday afternoon to wish Clarkston a happy 175th birthday, and dedicate its new bridge.
‘This is something typical about small town Americana,? said Bart Clark. ‘This bridge will make the back area more accessible and it will add to the park, hats off to Jim and Ginni Schultz.?
Jennifer Arkwright, president of Clarkston Community Historical Society Board, said she was glad the society could be a part of the celebration.
‘You’ve got to love Clarkston,? she said.
Members of the community enjoyed the celebration.
‘It’s a very nice thing that they do. Kids are having fun and the weather’s great,? said Stacey Frankovich.
‘Bringing the kids out, having a nice bridge to cross, it was a pain in the neck to go around,? said Susan Brohman. ‘It’s nice that the historical society is here, it brings a sense of continuity and helps celebrate the anniversary.?
The day’s festivities included kid’s games such as tug-a-war, sack hopping, and wood skiing.
‘I think it’s a great way to remember our community,? said Rachel Pytel. ‘It’s a very small town and we all know each other.?
The historical society had brought old photographs portraying the different eras of Clarkston, as well as an old Buggy for pictures with family and friends, ice cream concession stand, and balloons for kids to enjoy. The Clarkston Community Band also came out to play for the crowd.
‘It’s fabulous,? said Clarkston City Council member Kristi Ottman. ‘It’s exactly what this community is all about.?
Barbara Thomson and Mayor Sharron Catallo cut the ribbon at the bridge dedication.
‘I’m overwhelmed,? said Ginni Schultz after the bridge was dedicated. ‘The people of this community are so incredible and so giving.?
