Two weeks ago we editorialized, giving Clarkston School District a ‘C? grade in regards to how students stack up on state standards. Based on the Michigan assessment tests, about 30 percent of Clarkston kids didn’t meet or exceed state standards. While Clarkston did better than most districts, we opined they can do better.
So it is with optimism we listen to district deputy superintendent David Reschke when he outlines Clarkston’s plan to help those 30 percent.
?. . . we’re not doing a complete job . . . 29 to 30 percent of students are not ready for college course work ? they need remediation classes,? he admitted (see story on page 5A). Hats off to Reschke, the specialists who will help our kids and to the district.
The first step was recognizing Clarkston can do better — the next steps will be harder, but we believe will be achieved. — dpr
