Which are we: builders or wreckers in Goodrich?

To the editor:
In recent years, there seem to be a few persistent individuals in our Goodrich community who do not understand the concept of ‘building? a community through ‘positive? involvement. They are once again carrying a petition to recall the village council in what seems to be another round at dissolving the village community. The objective of their accusations is simply to instill in the public a sense of mistrust toward the village council members and thus obtain signatures for the recall petition being carried. People from outside of our community are wondering just what has happened to the peaceful small-town atmosphere in Goodrich?
Maybe it’s the thinning ozone layer. Consider this poem, written generations ago by an unknown author.
Its words are as meaningful here in Goodrich today as ever they could be. Which are we? Builders or wreckers?
‘I watched them tearing a building down, a gang of men in a busy town.
With a ho, heave, ho and a lusty yell, they swung a beam and a wall fell. I asked the foreman, ‘Are these men skilled? Like the men you’d hire if you had to build?? He laughed as he replied, ‘No, indeed, just common labor is all I need. I can easily wreck in a day or two, what builders have taken years to do.? I asked myself as I went away, ‘Which of these roles have I tried to play? Am I a builder who works with care, measuring life by rule and square? Or am I a wrecker who walks the town, content with the labor of tearing down???
