To the editor:
Some things became evident during the meeting which Larry Allen initiated last Monday. The first is that Mr. Allen is being proactive in his approach to issues concerning the district. Make no mistake, this meeting would not have taken place a year ago. A little more empathy and less drama from all sides is needed. Things are changing for the better, if not fast enough for those at the core of these issues.
Serious threats cannot be overlooked, parents must be informed of such threats, but at the same time, the administration must be allowed the latitude to deal with these issues and protect the rights of all children. Special needs children have every right to be mainstreamed. It’s the law, period. You can’t vote on it.
Everyone should know by now that up until Mr. Allen took over and began the process of cleaning up this mess, Goodrich schools were, and in some cases still continue to be, in violation of state and federal laws. Similarly, when threats occur, they are a serious cause for concern, as events last week sadly demonstrated. All parents want a safe environment for their children. Mr. Allen and the administration, I believe, learned that better communication is warranted and will be forthcoming. I believe this community, the entire community, wants all of its children treated fairly and with respect.
I went to the girl’s basketball game later that night and once again, something happened that demonstrated to me how in tune and fantastic a job our parents and students are doing. Everyone stood to listen to the ‘National Anthem,? we waited for what seemed like two long minutes, then some students in the stands just started singing the anthem; everyone joined in. Everyone cheered at the end of the song and then the ladies went out and crushed their opponents. It was very cool. We aren’t perfect, but Goodrich is a great community.
Please, more empathy and less drama.
