Local deputies named top cops

Brandon Twp.- They work hard to keep the community safe and now, several of the township’s police officers are being recognized for their efforts.
On March 3, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office announced selections for honors at their annual awards ceremony, planned for May 12.
Those honorees include Detective Chris Pacholski as Investigator of the Year; Sgt. Pete Burkett and Deputies Mike Garrison and James Saunders, all cited for professional excellence; Deputies James Ridley and James Willyard, to be given commendation certificates, and Public Safety Aide Larry Roberts, who will be awarded posthumously the Sheriff’s Distinguished Service Award.
Pacholski, who was assigned 350 cases in 2007 and obtained 93 warrants, has been a detective here for nearly two years and has worked for the OCSO for the past 14 years, including a 10-month stint as a patrolman in the township in 2003.
‘I’m honored to be selected for the award,? said Pacholski, who was honored last year with a citation for professional excellence and a commendation certificate. ‘I’m proud to serve the citizens of Brandon Township. I try to put extra time and effort into every case.?
Burkett, who was named commander of the Brandon substation in December, was nominated for the professional excellence award by a deputy at his former post, the Oxford substation.
‘It’s very rewarding to know people think that much of you to put your name in for something,? he said.
Ridley and Willyard were nominated for their efforts in subduing a gun-wielding suicidal subject in August. The deputies were dispatched to a township residence where shots had been fired by the subject and upon arrival, they rescued several innocent civilians inside the residence. Willyard then distracted the subject while Ridley subdued the man using a Taser. The gun was secured and the subject was taken into custody without further incident.
In the form nominating Roberts for the Distinguished Service Award, Burkett wrote, ‘Beyond his daily duties, Larry acted as a friend, father, brother, and mentor to the deputies assigned to the Brandon substation… Even through his bout with cancer, therapy, and numerous doctor visits, he still continued to come to work with a great attitude and professional demeanor. Words alone cannot portray this man’s battle and his dedication to the sheriff’s office.?
Burkett had plenty of praise for all the award winners, saying they go above and beyond their duties everyday.
‘The township and citizens are getting a lot of bang for their buck,? he said. ‘They are dedicated and out there doing good police work.?
