Goodrich – A week ago Friday, Oaktree Principal Elizabeth Wallberg was the picture of success.
Actually, she was covered in it.
More than 200 of her elementary students loaded paper plates with whipped cream and, despite a futile attempt to deflect the sweet projectiles, Wallberg gladly accepted the barrage. Coupled with some general reveling, the celebration was a reward for third, fourth and fifth grade students who read books at home or were read to by their parents for 16 hours or more during the month of March.
Organizer and teacher, Roxann Dziduch said she thinks the reading contest was a hit with students. ‘I noticed a lot of kids starting to enjoy reading,? said Dziduch. ‘Some students finally found their niche and discovered what they really like to read.?
Some students wanted to read more.
‘I read mostly fiction?63 books. I really like to read. Instead of 16 hours, I read for 27 hours,? said Student Corey Bibber.
The payoff was big for some students
‘It was really awesome, definitely worth it,? said Austin Bettoie following a pie toss.
Besides earning the ultimate goal, throwing a pie at their principal, there was a tasty bonus.
The theme ‘Get Into a Good Pizz-a Reading,? also motivated students to do between four and 16 hours of reading, knowing it would qualify them to get a pizza lunch during the day-long celebration. Allowing students to wear their pajamas to school for the festivities that day also added to the fun.
