Celebrating service

It was all about service — to the schools, to the students and to the community — at last week’s Service Learning Gala.
Service Learning Coordinator Mary Beth VanBuskirk and Michigan’s Service Learning Commission put on the gala at the CERC building.
Teachers from all over Lake Orion came to show off their service learning projects to the other teachers.
Projects ranged from alternative spring break with the high school to an elementary gardening club.
The afternoon started off with socializing and learning more about each of the projects, as well as entertainment from selected students from the Lake Orion High School Orchestra.
A presentation followed, where VanBuskirk, Angelia Salas of Michigan’s Service Learning Commission and Lake Orion Superintendant Christine Lehman gave out certificates of ‘thanks? to each teacher who had put together a community project.
Over 20 teachers were recognized, along with Lake Orion Service Learning Board Members, and three students for going above and beyond in the community.
After the presentation, refreshments were served, provided by Tom Phillips? independent living class, and the entertainment continued, this time by LOHS teacher Tom Romito playing the guitar.
VanBuskirk said she was very pleased with the outcome of the evening and can’t wait to see what there is to come in the next year.
She also offered thanks to all of the teachers who came and for making a difference in the Orion community.
