Theresa Demers grew up with an artist? her mother, Dolores Kurily, was an art teacher for 55 years.
Demers took some art classes in high school and her mother taught her some art techniques when she was young. But it wasn’t until about 13 years ago, when Demers was 40, that she really got into art.
‘I wonder what kind of goofy person I was to not have learned how to do it then, because it is such a part of me,? the Brandon Township resident says now. ‘It’s my biggest interest.?
Demers says she has always had a great relationship with her mom, 76. Now she has even more respect for the work of Kurily and an understanding of how difficult it can be.
‘She’s such a wonderful teacher,? Demers said. ‘I hope to be as good as her someday… Even though she stopped teaching, I still show up for class.?
Kurily and Demers will be featured in an art exhibit titled ‘Mom & Me,? with about 30 pieces including pastels and oil paintings, from May 4-31 at the Flint Street Gallery, 15 E. Flint St., in Lake Orion. Details: 248-814-8697.
