Goodrich School Board candidates: choose two May 6

James A. Bertrand (incumbent)
Previous office/term: Goodrich School Board for last four years. Secretary for last three years.
Age: 43
Occupation: Vice President, Strategic, National Accounts, Siemens Medical Solutions, Inc.
Family: Lisa, wife; five children, Andrew, Bryce, Alyssa, all graduated from Goodrich; Chase and Brittany, current sophomores at Goodrich.
Education, experience and skills: B.S., Ag Industries, University of Illinois, 1982; Sales mgmt. for the last 7 years. Senior mgmt. for last two years, and managed a sales budget in excess of $2 billion.
Which issues do you most want to address if elected and how will you do this?: Fiscal responsibility, continued academic excellence, new administration guidance, and become a ‘Destination School.? Advertise our excellence in academics, fine arts, and athletics to maintain and grow our student population.
How do you plan to save the schools money in tough economic times without jeopardizing education?: Reduce costs in labor with least impact on classrooms, transportation, administration and utilize outsourcing are a few ways. We must also maintain and grow student count.

Mark Griffiths
Previous office/term: None
Age: 57
Occupation: Manufacturers Rep for Akzo Nobel Coatings.
Family: Daughters, Laurel (GHS 2004, Kalamazoo College, 2008) Kelsey (GHS, 2009).
Education, experience and skills: I have approximately 110 hours of college at General Motors Institute and OCC. I ran and owned a painting company for 12 years so I am familiar with business operations.
Which issues do you most want to address if elected and how will you do this?: 1. Rebuild trust. We must have open and honest communication. 2. Fix Special needs. Create and follow all IEP’s in their entirety. 3. Attract new students. Promote our district as one which sets the standards.
How do you plan to save the schools money in tough economic times without jeopardizing education?: Cuts should come from all areas and keep teacher layoffs minimal. I would eliminate the transportation supervisor and cut at least one principal or the AD before any teacher.
Number of school board meetings previously attended: I believe I have missed only six in the last four years. I have gone to finance and curriculum committee meetings when I could find out about them.

Family: Wife, Kim (married 16 1/2 years, teacher at Lapeer East HS), Son, Austin (age 11, fifth grade, Oaktree), Son, Duncan (age 9, fourth grade, Oaktree), Daughter, Willow (age 5, preschool, Oaktree)
Education, experience and skills: BA English Language and Literature U-M Ann Arbor, independent businessman w/ management skills, Pres. Goodrich Chamber of Commerce, co-chair of Goodrich Schools Facility Planning Committee, member Goodrich Lions Club, Youth Soccer coach six years, active in schools and community.
Which issues do you most want to address if elected and how will you do this?: I would like to improve communications and interaction between board, administration, teachers, students and parents. Each of these groups has a unique understanding of different issues which should be incorporated.
How do you plan to save the schools money in tough economic times without jeopardizing education?: Implementation of a bond extension would alleviate a significant burden from the general fund without increasing taxes. Improving programs will attract School of Choice students and enrich the Goodrich educational experience.
