“We walk because they walk”

Dear Editor:
It will not rain from 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 21. Why? Because that is when the Ortonville Community Crop Walk takes place, and it has never rained on the Crop Walk in more than 25 years.
This community walk raises funds for relief of hunger worldwide, as well as right here at the Ortonville Community Emergency Fund Food pantry located at St. Anne Catholic Church, 825 South Ortonville Road. Some funds are used for emergency response to natural disasters and refugee situations, but most of the money goes toward projects that deal with the root cause of hunger: lack of clean water, shortage of medical care, need for seeds and tools, etc.
Here is how it works. Each walker takes pledges for walking the approximately 3-mile route through town on paved surfaces. If you can’t walk that far, take pledges for a shorter distance or rock for the duration of the walk. These pledges are recorded on a walk sheet, the money is put into the walk envelope and turned in after the walk.
Many people must walk miles for drinkable water and firewood. Refugees walk to find a safe place to rest. Crop’s motto is ‘We walk because they walk.? Join your friends; it is lots of fun and good for your ‘soles.? Details: 248-627-3111.
