The Women’s Commission of Oakland County toured the United Way 211 call center in Detroit in July and hosted a presentation by the program in August.
‘This is such an under-utilized service in Oakland County,? said Commissioner Cheryl Fried, who organized the tour and presentation. ‘Many people don’t know there are numerous resources out there to help them with foreclosure, utility, burial help, and many other services, especially, during a crisis. People don’t know how to find them.?
The United Way 211 service is easy to remember and quickly provides callers with the information they are looking for, instead of being transferred, or told to call a bunch of different agencies,? said Fried.
The United Way 211 service is an informational referral service. Callers call the number and provide their ZIP code and explain what service they need. Operators give them contact information for agencies and organizations.
