Abandoned kittens need homes

A litter of kittens left outside the Pet Supplies Plus (971 S. Lapeer Rd.) in Oxford Township Saturday night are in need of some loving homes with responsible owners.
It was 9:23 p.m. when someone banged loudly on the store’s door, left a Fed Ex box sealed with duct tape outside, then drove off, according to Manager Colleen Timoff.
Alarmed by the strange incident, store employees debated what to do for 10 minutes before going outside to examine the box. ‘We thought it was a bomb,? Timoff said. ‘I wanted to call 9-1-1.?
When they opened the mysterious package, the only explosion was a burst of tiny meows from five cute kittens.
The litter appears to be about three or four weeks old. All the little felines ‘look pretty healthy? and are litter box-trained, according to employee Jamie Boase-Brotzke, who agreed to take them home for a couple weeks until owners can be found.
‘If they don’t get adopted, I’ll take them to a rescue group,? she said. ‘I’m guessing they’re going to be adopted.?
Two have already been adopted, so there are three kitties left. But Boase-Brotzke doesn’t want to just give the kittens to anybody who walks in off the street. ‘We’re looking for homes with people who know how to take care of them,? she said.
That means people who don’t believe in the irresponsible practice of letting cats roam around outside. ‘We don’t want them to just be outdoor cats,? Boase-Brotzke said.
It also means people who understand that ‘a free kitten isn’t free.?
‘A free kitten is $150 to $200 in vet care right off the bat for the first round of shots and spaying or neutering,? according to Boase-Brotzke. ‘And if you choose to get them de-clawed, that’s extra.?
Anyone interested in adopting any or all of the four kittens can contact Boase-Brotzke at (248) 408-5496.
It should be noted that Pet Supplies Plus is not a drop-off location for unwanted animals. ? Editor C.J. Carnacchio
