Lady hoopsters break Mustangs

Overcoming a 14-point deficit, the Oxford Lady Wildcat Basketball Team notched their first win of the season as they held on to defeat the Clio Lady Mustangs 63-59 Dec. 12 at Clio.
With the win, the girls are now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in Flint Metro League action.
The win was, no doubt, a big confidence booster for the ladies, who had lost 66-52 to Lake Orion to open the season and then were doubled up 54-27 by Troy.
Joelle Harms led the way against Clio with 18 points, followed by Le’Essa Collier (who narrowly missed a double double) with 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, Cassi Archer with 12 points (including two three-pointers), and Brooke Bocquet with 7 rebounds and 9 assists.
‘We were down 33-19 in the middle of the second quarter but came back with our best defensive effort of the season so far,? said Girls Head Coach Al Poynter. ‘I was also very proud of how we finished the game, as we had some tough breaks in a very difficult place to play in, but we hung tough and pulled it out.?
Clio led the game 37-29 at halftime, but after a first half where the Lady Mustangs shot well (including from three-point range), they came out ice-cold in the second half as the Lady Wildcats pressured with their defense.
After tying the game up at 41 at the third quarter’s 2-minute mark, Oxford then went on a 10-1 run to give themselves a cushion. They outscored Clio 15-4 in the third quarter and edged them out in the fourth quarter 19-18 as the Lady Mustangs went into foul mode to try to cut into the Wildcats? lead.
On Dec. 16, the Lady Wildcats played against Flint Kearsley on the road. Dec. 19, they’ll host the Lapeer West Lady Panthers at 6 p.m.
