Family, community and good service.
These are the pillars upon which, the Lynches built their funeral home business which has included the Bossardet Funeral Home in Oxford since July 2002.
Tim and Jennifer Lynch, of Walled Lake, are the funeral home’s new owners.
The couple represents the second generation of Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors (founded in 1948), one of the largest family-owned and operated firms in Michigan with funeral homes in Walled Lake, Clawson, Plymouth and Milford.
Tim and Jennifer own the Walled Lake home while Tim’s brothers and their spouses independently own and operate the other homes. Tim Jr. manages the Walled Lake funeral home.
‘The company Jennifer and I operate is far morelike the company John and Ed (Bossardet) have operated,? Tim said. ‘We are a Ma and Pa funeral home. We do help each other all the time so we work as one family but we’re not one big company that has bought a small funeral home. We’re a small funeral home that has extended our labor force to Oxford.?
The home is now called the Bossardet Chapel: Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors.
‘The Bossardet name is on top,? Tim said. ‘They’ve been here the longest and we will always respect and honor that name and their years of service.?
While Tim and Jennifer divide their time between Oxford and Walled Lake, their son, Kevin, and his fiance, Kirsten Gawronski oversee the day-to-day operations at the Bossardet Chapel, along with Kevin’s sister, Katie.
Kevin and Katie both graduated from Wayne State Unversity’s Mortuary School in August 2002.
Kevin is now a licensed funeral director and manages the Bossardet Chapel, which also doubles as his home. Katie is in the process of completing her apprenticeship.
Kirsten will move into the Bossardet Chapel after her and Kevin are wed in July of this year.
‘Had we not had this third generation come to work. for us we wouldn’t have been able to expand into Oxford,? Tim said. ‘We will only (add a new funeral home) if we can have a family member living within the community and tending to it. Growing up we were taught the funeral director is supposed to be part of the community.?
‘Our approach to our work is to serve the community in which we live, to serve our neighbors. This allows the best form of funeral service because if there’s something done correctly we’re the ones the family says thank you to. If there’s something that’s less than perfect we’re the people they can take that up with. We have no regional manager or any accountability outside the people within the community and our own family,? he added.
Tim wants to reassure Oxford’s families that John and Ed Bossardet are still around to keep an eye on the place. John is currently working as a funeral director at the home. ?(John’s) already communicated to us that there are many families we will be called upon to serve in the future who will want him to be there for them, whether he’s a funeral director or just a friend. John will be with us and the many families we will serve for many years to come.?
With regard to Ed, who lives just next door to the funeral home, Tim said, ‘He’s our mentor. Most mornings Ed and I have coffee right in this room. I refer to it as our history lesson. Ed is filling us in on everything from who’s who in the community to what’s what in the building.?
When it comes to their work, Tim said the Lynch family does not view funeral service as a ‘job? or ‘career.?
‘We see it as a vocation,? he said. ‘Funeral service when entered into for the right reasons is an extremely rewarding life-style. To us, serving people has been a way of life.? The Bossardet Chapel Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors is located at 39 W. Burdick St. For more information call 628-3100.
