Mounted unit out for a winter ride

Three members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Unit went for a ride along the Polly Ann Trail last week as part of a training exercise.
Utilizing a designated equestrian trail like the Polly Ann allows the mounted patrol to give their horses a workout during the winter months in a safe environment, according to Wayne County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Olszewski.
‘This is good work for the horses to go through this snow,? he said. The trio started near Oxford Fire Station #1 and planned to ride all the way to Leonard.
Besides exercise, bringing the horses out to the trail gets them used to riding near traffic, such as the vehicles along Lakeville Rd., and interacting with people they encounter, such as nosey reporters who wonder what they’re doing out here.
