It just wasn’t their destiny.
The Lady Dragons ended their dream season last Friday at the state semi-finals with an ending score of 65-45 in favor of Destiny Williams? Benton Harbor.
‘Last year’s season finish was like a heart attack, but this year’s was more of just a slap in the face,? said Coach Steve Roberts.
The girls held the lead at the end of the first quarter with a score of 16-10 in favor of the Dragon’s.
The Benton Harbor Tigers rallied back in the second quarter, taking a slight lead.
At the end of the half, the Tigers were up 28-24.
Right off the bat, Benton Harbor intercepted a Lake Orion pass and scored twice at the start of the third, bringing the score to 40-32.
‘Whenever you strive to be the best, the results are not always that you are the best,? said Roberts.
The Lady Dragons held on tight as Bethany Watterworth scored a bucket, followed by another from Melanie Lamerato.
Benton Harbor had earned themselves quite a lead at the end of the third with a score of 46-34.
The scoring was a back and forth battle the entire fourth quarter, but Lake Orion couldn’t get through the Tigers? defense.
Watterworth had a huge block halfway through, hoping to put an end to Benton Harbor’s scoring streak.
The game ended with several fouls from both teams and the Dragons left defeated.
‘We came one day and one game away from the possibility of winning states and achieving our goal,? added Roberts.
Benton Harbor went on to defeat Livonia Franklin on Saturday, leaving the Dragons third in the state.
Not only was it a record breaking season for girl’s varsity basketball history, but also a high achievement in girl’s sports at Lake Orion.
‘We’ve accomplished what we’ve accomplished, and we’re going to continue to work hard and succeed to the highest level that we are capable of,? Roberts said.
All-in-all, the girls ended with a strong finish and an overall record of 24 wins and a mere 3 losses.
‘There is always some heartache in not achieving your goal, but the girls have absolutely no reason to hang their heads,? said Roberts.
