Road Commission for Oakland County expects to spend less for some routine summer road maintenance this year to help make up extra winter spending of about $500,000.
Activities to be cut include mowing grass along roads and in medians, picking up litter along roads and trimming roadside brush.
The Road Commission spent more than $11.2 million on winter road maintenance, most on spreading salt and plowing snow. The 2008/2009 winter is the second-most-expensive winter on record, surpassed by the 2007/2008 costs of $12.1 million.
Oakland County snowfall was above average, and many snow storms were at night, weekends and holidays, when RCOC must pay overtime. The commission also has 64 fewer employees than two years ago.
