A journey back to the days of the Civil War will take place at the Independence Township Library on Monday, Feb. 10.
Maureen Esther will bring her storytelling talents to the library to share photographs and captivating stories about the Civil War era. The program is sponsored by the Clarkston Community Historical Society.
“We are always, as the historical society, looking to offer some kind of program which is history related,” CCHS President Jennifer Arkwright said. “I am real excited about the program.”
Esther has made a passion into a career. As a child she was exposed to different examples of art and history which set the tone for the rest of her life.
“I am pretty much self taught by reading. I have a great interest in history,” Esther said. “Also, my father and my brother-in-law both knew a tremendous amount about history.”
Esther gives slide presentations on American history, Russian history, Ancient history and European history including the Middle Ages, Henry the VIII and the history of Ireland.
She started as a member of the Parent/ Teacher Association and began to go into classrooms to teach specific history. This was about 12 years ago and it has grown into a career.
“I love it. It is great to be paid for something you love to do. I have 17 different lectures on a number of different time periods,” Esther said. “I am just swamped with programs. Even before the holidays I was booked through the school year.”
Esther plans to share multiple stories with the audience, including some with Independence Township ties.
This program kicks off a busy few months for the historical society.
“We have a benefit play on March 12 and a cemetery walk on May 17. We are excited to have Maureen start the season. We are always looking for programs to give to the public,” Arkwright said.
The program will run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission for CCHS members is free and it is $1 for non-members. Admission includes dessert and coffee.
