Neighbors help family through fire

The Smith family of Springfield Township woke in the middle of the night, Sunday, to their garage on fire with their home soon to follow.
Steven and Jill Smith and two of their children were at home, but everyone managed to scramble to safety. What happened next surprised them.
‘We were outside in shorts and T-shirts, no shoes,? Steven said. ‘Our neighbors brought us shoes and blankets, and clothes for the kids ? they were incredible.?
After spending the night at his wife’s mother house, they returned to more surprises.
‘During the night, my neighbors took up a collection ? it was $300,? he said. ‘We usually keep to ourselves, and to be that giving to people they don’t know that well, I just want to thank them.?
He called 911 at about 1:40 a.m., and Springfield Township firefighters and county sheriff deputies responded.
‘The firefighters offered water, beverages, coffee ? they were very helpful,? Smith said.
The detached garage was consumed by the fire, which may have been electrical. Investigation continues.
