To kick off Michigan Severe Weather Awareness Week, winners of the 2010 statewide Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest were awarded U.S. Savings Bonds at the State Capitol in Lansing on Tuesday, April 13.
Second place was awarded to Brittney Tarkanyi, a student at Carpenter Elementary.
The contest, open to students enrolled in grades fourth or fifth, is a project of a coalition formed in 1991 to coordinate public information efforts regarding flood, tornado and winter safety.
Posters were judged on their illustration of the importance of preparedness in the event of severe weather. There were over 600 entries in the poster contest.
