Lola Latreille’s first place CreekFest poem begins,
‘How still the evening is!
No breeze whispers in the pine tree.
There is no bird song to break this magic hush.?
Latreille’s poem, ‘Moonpath,? was only one of the recognized works from June 5 CreekFest Poetry Contest.
There were two categories of submissions based on age. Latreille’s category of 15-and-older also recognized the second place poem, ‘On the Brow of the Storm,? by Ellen Soroka, and two honorable mention poems: ‘Sun on Water? by Ed Van Slambrouck and ‘Schooldays? by Rick Stigleman.
The 14-and-younger category also brought about winning poetry, with a first place poem entitled ‘Frosty Peppermint Breath? by Serena Scholz. Second place went to ‘The Trip of a Wave? by Taylor Rieves, and honorable mention was awarded to Chandler Yarnall for ‘Michigan Waters? and Megan Genslak for ‘Water.?

The Ortonville Creekfest Committee will host its third annual CreekFest Poetry Contest, a Green Arts program supported by the Center for Applied Environmental Research at the University of Michigan’Flint.
Creekfest is a festival that celebrates and promotes the preservation of Michigan waterways. Thematic poetry pieces will be favored but not mandatory. All entries must be postmarked by May 1, and walk-in submissions must be turned in by 4:30 p.m., May 1, at the Ortonville village offices. Submissions should be addressed to:
