There was a report of a giant shouting through a megaphone atop the roof of Leonard Elementary last week, but it turns out it was just Principal Paul McDevitt.
Dressed as the giant from the classic fairy tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk,? McDevitt read a story to his students as he towered over them from the school’s roof.
McDevitt’s no-so-little stunt was a reward to the student body for reading 2,825 books and chapters during March is Reading Month.
Every time a K-2 student read a book, a green construction-paper leaf was added to a beanstalk that stretched throughout the entire school. Every time a student in grades 3-5 read a chapter, a leaf was added to the beanstalk.
Teacher Rob Murray’s fourth-graders generated 634 of those leaves, the most of any class in the school. As a reward, his class won the Golden Book Award.
After he climbed down from the roof, McDevitt played his groovy guitar for the kids and let them check out his cool pointed shoes. ? Editor C.J. Carnacchio
