Dr. Joe Mastromatteo, left, chairman of the Orion Veterans Memorial Committee and member of VFW Post 334, accepts a check for $8,500 from Joe Zikewich to help pay for the wall behind the Pea Coat Memorial. Zikewich, an Orion resident, served on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington which was badly damaged by a kamikaze plane at the battle of Okinawa. More than 40 of Zikewich’s shipmates and friends were killed in battle and now have bricks dedicated to them at the memorial, located on the corner of M-24 and Odanah Street. Photo submitted
