Clarkston Mayor Joe Luginski is setting up a subcommittee to look at ways to slow traffic on Main Street, such as crosswalk stripes, solid white lines to narrow main street, and posting electronic “your speed is” signs in downtown.
But after talking with Steve Stramsak of Michigan Department of Transportation, City Council decided against a speed study.
According to Stramsak, if the average speed was higher than the posted 30 miles per hour, according to MDOT’s 85 percentile rule, the state could increase the speed limit.
“Just because a driver feels comfortable going 40 miles per hour doesn’t mean it’s right,” Luginski said. “That (the 85 percent rule) makes no sense other than it’s written on a piece of paper. We’re talking about a residential area.”
