Independence Oaks County Park will be closed on Nov. 16, 21, 23, 28, and Dec. 5 and 7 for a deer-management hunt.
Park ecosystem programs also include removal of invasive species, prescribed burns, and reintroduction of native plants.
The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission’s Deer Management Controlled Hunt Program was initiated at Independence Oaks in 2003.
The managed hunt program is in partnership with Michigan Department of Natural Resources Block Permit Program to manage deer according to goals established by state game biologists. The program is conducted on a volunteer lottery basis. Volunteer hunters must possess valid drivers and hunting licenses, and attend a park-specific safety training session prior to each managed hunt.
The hunts have produced more than 36,000 venison meals for Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunter Program, said Oakland County Parks and Recreation Executive Officer Dan Stencil.
