For Candy Cane CHRISTmas Tree Farm, the spirit of giving is already in the air.
This holiday season, the local Oxford tree farm will participate in the 2011 ‘Trees for Troops? program, which is a nationwide program where Christmas trees are donated by farms and community members to families stationed on military bases. Sponsored by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and the FedEx Corporation, the goal for this year is to have 17,000 trees delivered to military bases both at home and overseas.
It’s a time when we all think of family and the birth of Christ and bringing joy. It’s a happy time. Military families are not real wealthy, and they’re on bases where they wouldn’t have the opportunity to go and get a tree. By bringing trees to these bases, they will have the opportunity to enjoy the love and the support,? said Catherine Genovese, who owns Candy Cane Christmas Tree Farm with her husband, Frank.
Nationally, the goal is to donate a total of 17,000 trees, bringing the program’s 7 year total to 100,000 trees. Through Dec. 2, trees will be available at Candy Cane to purchase for $30 to donate. Those who donate can then sign a card with well wishes to attach to the tree. At 10 a.m. Dec. 2, a FedEx truck will be loaded with the trees to be shipped to Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Volunteers are more than welcome to come out to help load trees into the trucks.
Those wishing to donate a tree can visit Candy Cane CHRISTmas Tree Farm, 4780 Seymour Lake Road, Oxford. For more details, call 248-628-8899.
