Letter to the editor – Memorial is nearly finished, needs help

One of Michigan’s most impressive Veterans Memorials is located in Lake Orion on Lapeer Road at Odanah Street. Developed over 19 years, it is nearing completion but funding is urgently needed to pay for the last major project which is the central monument. The monument consists of four life-size figures cast in bronze of a family unit with arms around each other: Mother, father and younger sister embracing a soldier. The well-known sculptor and Vietnam veteren Frank Varga created this statue and it is currently being cast. It will be delivered and installed by Memorial Day 2012.
Mr. Varga is creating and producing the statue for just the cost of the materials. The total cost is $55,000 and $30,000 has been paid to date. An additional $25,000 must be raised before April 30. Donations would be most welcome and contributions are tax deductible as the memorial has a 501 (c) (3) designation. Checks should be made out to Orion Veterans Memorial and mailed to 312 S. Broadway, Lake Orion, MI, 48362. For more information visit the memorial’s website at orionveteransmemorial.com or call (248) 693-6636.
The Orion Veterans Memorial Commemorative Walkway is a dedicated area outside the walls of the Orion Veterans Memorial where families, corporations, companies and organizations can purchase an engraved brick to help pay for this monument. The Orion Veterans Memorial serves as a special place where people regularly go to remember either a family member or a close friend who served our country and near and dear to them.
