2-peat tennis champions

For the second consecutive year, not only have the Lady Wolves captured the MHSAA Girls Tennis Regional title but scored 30 points out of a possible 32 points.
“We were very excited,” said Becky Freeman, head coach for the Clarkston Girls Varsity Tennis team. “Winning 30 points was great. Every player made it to the finals. It was exactly were we wanted to be.”
Each court had a Lady Wolf on it going into the championship battle and six won their matches pushing them to the top.
For singles, Katie Brozovich took on Rochester Adams’ Halle Hyman in court one – and it was a fight no one would forget going into the first match.
“It was real intense,” Freeman added. “It was really good tennis.”
But only one could come out a winner and it was Brozovich – 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3.
“It was her talent, her skills and her desire,” Freeman said about what helped Brozovich to win. “I knew she was going to win. She is too feisty.”
For singles, Lexi Baylis, in court two, defeated Rochester Adams’ Marla Seaver, 6-0, 6-0; Paige Olsen, court three, defeated West Bloomfield’s Gillian Meyers, 6-1, 6-1; and Abbey Hubregson, court four, defeated Stoney Creek’s Lauren Kuzdak, 6-2, 6-1.
“Paige is doing great,” Freeman added abotu the player who moved to singles from doubles during the season. “She is playing really strong and seeing good competition. She is playing excellent. I am proud of her.”
The champions for doubles were: Dana Olsen and Olivia Dunn, in court one, defeated Jill Freedman and Meghana Subramanian from West Bloomfield, 6-1, 6-1; and Monique Zentner and Katie Hubregsen, court four, defeated Francesca Tiberi and Ariana Arwady from Rochester Adams, 6-2, 6-1.
“They all played extremely well,” Freeman added. “They were very solid all day. They gave up very few games.”
The doubles team of Allie Wilson and Amy Wozniak, in court two, and Jordan Stuart and MacKenzie Bedor, in court three, took runner-up.
Wilson and Wozniak lost their flight to Rochester Adams’ Cathy Weng and Christine Wang, 6-2, 6-2. Stuart and Bedor lost to Rochester Adams’ Kathy Xu and Kristin Heim.
During the Region 7 competition, Rochester Adams took second place, scoring 23 points and West Bloomfield took third with 17 points.
The Lady Wolves are now prepping for the MHSAA State Finals set for June 1-2 at Midland Community Tennis Center.
They played Marian on Monday and Birmingham Seaholm on Tuesday.
“We know the competition isn’t over,” Freeman said. “We set up tough matches for ourselves so we can better prepare ourselves for states.”
