This July 4th will be one long-remembered for some Orion Township residents as they struggled to continue their celebrations without the aid of electricity.
A severe thunderstorm carrying winds up to 61 miles per hour blew through the area on Friday afternoon, knocking out power for 4,000 households in Orion Township. According to Detroit Edison spokesperson Amy Allor, the storm knocked out power for about 35,000 homes in Oakland County, and 170,000 homes total in the Detroit Metro area.
“We have a handful still out in Orion Township,” she said on Monday afternoon. “Less than 50…we expect to have them back up by Monday night. There could be a few still out until Tuesday.”
On Monday, DTE still had about 2,000 homes still without power in Oakland County. According to the DTE website, the storm brought down about 2,000 power lines.
