The Orion Township Planning Commission approved the new Fire Station 2 site plan for 3925 Giddings Rd. with conditions.
Now it is up to the Zoning Board of Appeals to review the plan and approve or deny two variances, and if they do, the fire station is a go.
Fire Chief Bob Smith said they are going for a height variance, which would allow the station to be six inches taller than the zoning ordinance permits. Another variance would allow the fire hall to be nine feet closer to the railroad at 141 total feet in distance rather than 150 feet.
‘We’re in an area that will not affect anything else,? Chief Smith said. ‘The township will never be able to build in that one corner, and we will not be impinging on anybody else.?
If the variances are passed, construction could start in early April.
The Orion Township Zoning Board will discuss the fire hall at the next ZBA meeting March 10.
