The Lake Orion varsity boy’s golf team competed at the Oakland County district tournament this past week where individuals qualified for state regionals.
The team together did not move on, but they will be at Davision Country Club on Thursday, May 29 to cheer on their two junior qualifiers: Schuyler Werth and Patrick Cummins.
As for the overall season, Coach Monty Gallaher expressed his gratitude towards team members, saying he was proud of them since ‘they truly enjoy being around each other and are great people.?
Some of their top meets include the Southern Swing Tournament in Ohio, Oakland Hills South Course, and their final Oakland Athletics Association League Tournament.
?[Southern Swing Tournament] was a two day event in early April, which included a fun Ryder Cup style of competition for the teams attending. We played 36 holes’on Friday’and 18’on Saturday’morning,? Gallaher said. ‘All the parents attend and play at the same facility or walk along and watch the action. It is a great get away for all of our team. It was a very fun atmosphere and great for team bonding.?
The Oakland Hills South Course allowed the golf team to play on the same course as PGA events, US Opens and the Ryder Cup. As for OAA tournament, held at Orchard Lake Country Club, the team had 310 points, making them the champions of the tournaments. Individuals Griffin Beeler and Werth medaled.
While the rest of the team did not advance to regionals, Werth and Cummins will play this Thursday for their chance to move onto state finals at Michigan State University’s ies Forest Akers course.
Werth tied for fourth place in the district tournament by shooting 75, while Cummins shot 81, which granted them the chance to move onto the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s regionals.
