After being nominated by their coaches, various Lake Orion High School athletes were awarded the all county title after playing well throughout the 2014 season.
Nominations go to the Oakland Press newspaper and players are selected for first and second team, along with honorable mention.
Kennedi Thomas (outfielder) and Alex Carpenter (infielder) were selected on first team for their outstanding performances that led the Dragons to a 31-9 season.
Thomas was a senior at LOHS and is headed off to Saginaw Valley to continue her softball career. In her final season as a Dragon, Thomas batted .516 with 61 RBI and 38 runs. Kennedi was recognized as an honorable mention all-state softball candidate and played at the all-state game last weekend at Michigan State University.
Junior Carpenter had a batting average of .493 with 57 runs, 31 RBI and 43 stolen bases. Carpenter was also an honorable mention for all-state softball and will come back for her final season as a Dragon in the spring.
Head softball coach Joe Woityra is proud of his team for their accomplishments this season. ‘They are getting the awards for working very hard and having a good season,? Woityra said. ‘We look to build on that next year.?
‘It’s why they play 12 months a year to reap the rewards of their hard work. It’s nice to see that happens and it doesn’t go unnoticed,? Woityra said.
The second all-county team included sophomore pitcher Sierra Gonzales, junior infielder Rachel Dolland, and senior outfielder Kayla Knoblock. Junior Infielder Megan Hall and sophomore Carly McGee were acknowledged as all-county honorable mentions.
Varsity baseball senior pitchers Josh Bays and Brad Schaenzer were named all-county first team.
Bays pitched with 76 strikeouts in 50 total innings pitched, while going 5-1 with .56 ERA. On top of being placed on the all-county team, Bays made second team all-state representing Lake Orion in Division 1. Bays has signed to play baseball at Western Michigan University this upcoming season.
Sporting a 1.34 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings, Schaenzer helped push the baseball team to the beginning of playoffs. Schaenzer helped represent the east side during the all-star Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association baseball classic game at Comerica Park on July 10. Schaenzer has also signed to play baseball at the University of Kentucky.
