Everybody needs a hero from time to time.
Fortunately, this area has a hefty supply of them as once again public safety personnel played Santa Claus during the ‘Shop with a Hero? event held Dec. 9 at the Oxford Meijer.
Approximately 70 children from Oxford, Addison and surrounding communities went shopping with uniformed men and women from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department (five substations ? Oxford, Addison, Brandon, Oakland and Orion), Oxford Village Police, Youth Assistance and the fire departments serving Oxford, Addison, Brandon and Orion.
Meijer provided $150 gift cards for 22 of the kids and supplied all of them with a free bag of groceries.
The rest of the shopping money was furnished by the agencies, which solicit donations. For example, thanks to contributions from the 24th Street Sports Tavern, Carah K Photography, Roush Sales and Marketing, and Meijer, the Oxford Village Police Department was able to raise almost $1,000 to help three families and six kids, according to Sgt. Mike Solwold.
Prior to shopping, the kids were treated to a delicious dinner, courtesy of the 24th Street Sports Tavern in downtown Oxford.
