There was a lot of iron moving Saturday at Lake Orion High School.
A total of 370 powerlifters from schools throughout Michigan came to the Dragon den to participate in a powerlifting competition.
The high schoolers competed in three events – bench press, squat and dead lift ? in various weight classes. In some of the heavier weight classes, boys were lifting 450 to 500 pounds.
One Dragon lifter, sophomore Roger White, weighs only 168 pounds, but dead-lifted 490 pounds.
Lake Orion’s boys finished second in the meet, behind Port Huron, which swept boys, girls and junior varsity competitions with 93 lifters competing. Lake Orion had 61 lifters.
Lake Orion Coach Eric Jennings said he was pleased with the performance, which was the first of the season. Nine Dragon boys and five girls qualified to compete later in the season in state championship competition.
The boys who qualified are: Howard Farris, Jacob Berker, Roger White, Cam Kostiz, Shane Barnard, Jacob Barnard, Jamie Bailey, Neil Nunn and trevor Downe. The girls who qualified for the state meet are: Emily Bronikowski, Mary Cech, Katie Morgan, Alexis Kennedy, and Hannah Miller.
‘We have room to improve and get better but overall I am happy with the performances,? Jennings said. ‘The meet went very well with about 3,400 lifts in five and a half hours.?
The teams? next meet is February 7 at Grand Blanc.
