A 13 year old from Scripps Middle School decided she didn’t need any Christmas presents this year on her birthday, January 23.
Instead, she donated what could have been hers on February 9 to a worthy cause.
Mekenna Geiger asked friends and family to come to her birthday party with a pair of shoes. Through her party, social media and word of mouth, Geiger collected 300 pairs, some from as far as Nebraska, for a birthday idea of her own.
‘I wanted to give back to the community, to help people who can’t afford to get everything they need,? she said. ‘Because it’s so cold, I thought shoes might be a good idea.?
Geiger donated the 300 pairs of shoes to Love in the Name of Christ of North Oakland County (Love INC), which will be placed in the Clothes Closet at St. Mary’s In the Hills Episcopal Church at 2512 Joslyn Ct.
Geiger collected a little bit of everything, from winter boots to hunting boots, heels, flip flops and summer sandals, which will be available to Love INC clients.
‘It makes me feel happy, humble and grateful for what God has given me and for what I can give because he allowed me too,? Geiger said.

‘Can you imagine what she can do at 21, if at 13 she put out a requests for new shoes and collected 300? To me it’s just outstanding for a young lady to be able to do that,? Debbie Nelson said of Love INC.
