For the second straight year, the Oxford Middle School wrestling team won the Oakland County middle school championships held Saturday, March 14 in Lake Orion.
This is the team’s third county championship since 2012.
Eighteen teams competed in the seventh annual tournament and the Wildcats smoked them all. Oxford scored 322.5 points, beating out second place VanHoosen (217.5) and third place Clarkston Unified (206).
‘The boys really brought their ‘A? game and we won the tournament by over 100 points,? said Head Coach Jack Beall. ‘I believe that’s the largest margin of victory in the history of the tournament. We are, for sure, the first back-to-back champions.?
In individual competition, Oxford had 16 out of 20 wrestlers place in the top four.
Ten of those grapplers went on to compete in the finals, resulting in five first place finishes and five second place finishes for the Wildcats.
Individual champions (with their respective weight classes) included Liam Hillary (100), Joe Vackaro (110), Austin Schlicht (145), Canyon Wallington (152) and Devin Trevino (160).
Second place finishers included Rex Mayette (80), Adam Zyrowski (95), Caleb Tabert (120), Garritt Mahoney (125) and Thomas Wandrie (130).
