Letter to Editor: Take time to learn Chinese impact on Oxford

The Oxford School Board has approved the plan to bring 200 Chinese high school students into our high school.
The Oxford Township Planning Commission has granted preliminary site plan approval for the commercially-zoned 2.7 acres near Tim Horton’s for the dormitory. The contract with the Chinese based Weiming Education Group is for 20 years.
Our high school rating has gotten worse each of the last three years. It is now rated in the lowest 19 percent of the schools in Michigan. You can read details in the Oxford Leader March 4, 2015 (Bridget Magazine gives low rating to Oxford School district). Read the viewpoint by Sue Bellairs in the Oxford Leader March 11, 2015 (Anyone else tired of ‘excuses? for low test scores?). She said it better than I can.
What if our school management and school board would have spent the same time and effort on education for our local students than with Weiming Education Group? This is a program for the education of Chinese students. Most of you would be shocked at the number of trips (school administrators have taken) to China. You should be aware that our present (high) school is near to its capacity.
I have gone to the meetings and made my points. If you have a child in our system, they will be affected by the 20-year contract and most of you by the school tax you have to pay. You should understand the impact it will have now and (in) the future. Ask the questions and do not just accept the ‘trust my response? answer, question it.
