After getting a 1-0 start on the season, beating Rochester High 4-1 on the diamond, Girls Varsity Softball Head Coach Jessica Granger, is hoping her ‘young team,? consisting of three freshman, three sophomores, three juniors and four seniors can keep the momentum.
‘We hope to be competitive in the OAA White and look forward to seeing improvement with each game,? Granger said. ‘We have two tournaments this season that should give us some great competition.?
Out of the 13 girls, eight of them are returning players from last year.
‘Senior Team Captains Cherilyn Banas and Skye Donaldson will be great infielders for us this year, as well as leaders,? Granger explained. ‘Sophomore Maddie Dinges will be our centerfielder and will make some amazing plays out there.’And senior Diamond Zeiger will play first’base for us again this year, and will have a great defensive year.?
Granger said the five new players also have a lot to offer.
‘Freshmen Kaitlyn Bean and Hanna Vachon will be two work forces on the mound this year,? she added. ‘Sophomore Madelyn Morris will play outfield for us this year and freshman Lauren Donaldson will be a catcher for us this season and will also be a huge hitter.?
‘While they may be a young squad, the strength of the team Granger said is that they are ‘coachable and want to win.?
‘With hard work and passion for the game great things will come to this team,? she added.
As far as the league goes, Granger noted that OAA White is ‘always a strong league.? The goals of the season are ‘to take each day at a time, to improve and to win some ball games.?
‘Obviously, we’re always striving to win our last game and be competitive in post season,? Granger said.
