Most of the time, it’s not a good thing to have a big head.
The exception is during Oxford’s annual Lone Ranger parade.
Organizers of the Aug. 1 parade are seeking businesses, organizations and individuals willing to sponsor papier-mache heads from the Detroit-based Parade Company’s famed Big Head Corps. Every $200 sponsorship secures one of these unique, colorful and fun works of art for participation in Oxford’s grandest parade of the year.
Rod Charles, a Downtown Development Authority board member who serves on the parade committee, said it’s ‘quite a bargain for a direct connection to history.?
The Parade Company’s big head collection is ‘world-renown.?
‘These colorful artifacts were originally acquired from artists in Viareggio, Italy with some dating back to the 1940s,? according to the organization’s website.
The ‘ever-expanding collection? consists of nearly 300 heads and includes animals, bugs, Keystone Cops, clowns, children’s story characters, Indians, ethnic caricatures representing various nations and famous Michigan figures such as Bo Schembechler, Henry Ford, Tom Selleck, Sparky Anderson, Gordie Howe, Joe Louis, Rosa Parks and Bob Seger.
‘These are the same big heads that millions of people have watched on television every year (in Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day parade),? Charles said.
Charles believes local businesses would ‘greatly benefit by having their name attached to one of these historic figures.?
‘It’s a great thing for employees and potential customers to see,? he said.
Charles noted The Parade Company graciously agreed to give the Lone Ranger parade a discount on the big head rentals.
‘Others have to pay a higher price,? he said.
