Council okays trash contracts with Republic

Beginning Sept. 1, there will be a new trash hauler rolling through the streets and parking lots of Oxford Village.
Last week, council voted 3-2 to approve five-year contracts for residential and commercial waste collection with the Arizona-based Republic Services.
Council members Bryan Cloutier and Rose Bejma cast the dissenting votes. They had originally supported awarding the residential contract to the Oxford-based Odd Job Disposal.
Per the residential contract, village households will pay a starting monthly rate of $9.89 in 2015-16 for the weekly curbside collection of trash, recycling and yard waste.
After that, the monthly rate will increase by 3 percent annually until it tops out at $11.15 in 2019-20.
Thursday will remain the residential pickup day in the village.
Republic’s initial rate represents a 20 percent reduction over what village residents are currently paying.
The Sterling Heights-based Rizzo Environmental Services is charging $12.40 per month per residence. Rizzo’s contract with the village expires Aug. 31.
Republic, per the village’s request, will be providing every village residence with a 65-gallon wheeled recycling cart at no extra charge. Although the first one is free, replacement carts will cost $65 each. Republic retains ownership of the containers for the duration of the agreement.
Republic will also be taking over for Rizzo when it comes to emptying the village’s commercial dumpsters.
Right now, the village currently bills businesses for waste collection at a monthly rate of $24.50 per unit.
The number of units each business is assigned, which ranges from one to three, depends on the type of business and the amount of waste it generates.
Under Republic, the village’s monthly unit rate will increase to $30 in the first year and go up $1 annually until it tops out at $34 in the fifth year, according to Manager Joe Young.
