School labor complaint

Clarkston Community Schools faces a labor complaint filed by a teacher.
The complaint, filed by computer science teacher Ron Conwell with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission on Nov. 9, says Clarkston Education Association committed an unfair labor practice through the ‘Agency Shop Clause? in the teachers? contract.
The clause requires employees pay a fee to the union even if they choose not to be a part of it.
Clarkston Education Association’s agency shop agreement has been in place for some time, said Stephen Cook, Michigan Education Association president, in a public statement.
“As we have done since inception of Right to Work, we will continue to seek membership dues from members pursuant to their membership agreements and their negotiated agreement,? Cook said. ‘Our seeking dues in this situation is also consistent with the recent MERC decision.”
“We in Clarkston have a long history of collaborative, positive relations with our employees,” said Superintendent Dr. Rod Rock in a public statement. “We look forward to resolving this matter in a similar manner.”
