After a phone scam attempt in Springfield Township, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office warns residents to watch out for phony calls about jury duty and warrants.
A resident received a call on Jan. 26 from a ‘Captain Watson? of the Oakland County Sheriff’s ‘Warrants / Citations Division? saying the resident owed money for missing jury duty. The resident never received jury notification and called the township substation to report it.
The sheriff’s office has no ‘Captain Watson? nor ‘Warrants /Citations Division,? officials said.
Suspects have also called people claiming to be from the Oakland County Sixth Circuit Court, saying an arrest warrant was issued due to missing jury duty.
Anyone receiving a call from anyone requesting money for jury duty, or for owing taxes, which is another common scam, should call law enforcement, said Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard.
‘No law enforcement agency or court make intimidating phone calls and demand money from citizens,? Bouchard said. ‘These phone calls unfortunately target innocent individuals and these scam artists use legitimate names to try and cheat people out of money.?
