Editor’s Note: The Jan. 13 edition of the Leader featured a front-page story about Oxford Township resident Helen Barwig finding a collection of personal records belonging to former U.S. Congressman Lucien Nedzi (D-Michigan) in her basement. Included in the documents were Nedzi’s military records from World War II such as paperwork related to him receiving the Bronze Star medal. After the story was published, I mailed the records to Nedzi, who served in Congress from 1961-81 and now lives in McLean, Virginia. A short while later, I received the following letter.
Dear Mr. Carnacchio,
I have received the parcel you have sent and again wish to express my deep appreciation for your thoughtful pursuit in returning the documents to me. It caused an interesting trip down memory lane. How the documents found their way into Mrs. Barwig’s basement remains a mystery, but I am thankful for her effort in arranging their return.
You also deserve compliments on the well-written story in the Leader. It was a totally factual representation of events and what had occurred so many years ago. I was impressed with the newspaper and I am aware that the editor has most to do with its success. You have my best wishes for continued success and for whatever the future holds.
Most appreciatively,
Lucien Nedzi
