Brandon Twp.- The township’s website has been shut down after it was infected by an angler exploit kit, used by cyber criminals.
Oakland County government employees, which runs the township’s email system, discovered the tampering last week and blocked the township’s website.
‘It was actively infecting clients connecting to our site,? said Supervisor Kathy Thurman.
At a special meeting Feb. 8, the township board unanimously approved a motion to contract with IT Right for creation of a new website and hosting. The contract will cost the township $500 per year for hosting, and represents a savings of nearly $200 over the current contract of $684 annually with Brandon Computer Services.
‘We’ve never had a problem before,? said Thurman. ‘From what Oakland County tells me, the angler exploit kit is a very difficult virus to detect and get rid of. We don’t know how it got there… IT Right has more sophisticated anti-virus technology that they will use. Our contract is pending approval from the township attorney and as soon as that is done, we will start work on the new website.?
